These are low height domed cabochons with a flat back.

A triplet consists of a clear quartz 'cap' cemented to a thin layer of natural opal which is in turn cemented to a layer of potch (low grade opal), black obsidian or onyx or black resin. Triplets enable a low-cost but good value attractive gemstone to be created from a piece of opal which otherwise would be unuseable. Colour will vary from that illustrated as these are all natural opal.
